On this day our family joins yours in expressing our deepest gratitude to the courageous U.S.
warriors who gave their lives for us.

As with most military families, this is a solemn day in our household.  Yes, our kids will come over,
and we'll have lunch (steak, salad and roasted-in-the-shuck corn) out on the patio.  Likely Gus the
cat from next door will also drop by, plus late afternoon other neighbors.

Important as family is, what's most essential about this day is that we remember those "who died to
make men free."  As befits solemn days, this is a good time to ponder our great nation's future,
including the role of our young President who, aided and abetted by a Speaker with
memory
challenges, does not appear to know how to take criticism gracefully, and has spent, spent, spent --
then waited until Friday of this holiday weekend to reveal to the least-noticed TV news network
(
C-SPAN) that "We are out of money."  Thank God to Matt Drudge for getting the word out:
Netherlands American Cemetery and Memorial in
Margraten,  Europe's third largest war cemetery for
unidentified soldiers who died in World War II. 8,302
soldiers are buried there under long rows of white
crosses and stars of David. All graves are adopted by
locals, who attend the graves and lay flowers every now
and then.  President George W. Bush was the first
American president who visited the cemetery, on May
8, 2005.

'WE'RE OUT OF MONEY'
Sat May 23 2009 10:32:18 ET

In a sobering holiday interview with C-SPAN, President Obama boldly told
Americans: "We are out of money."  C-SPAN host Steve Scully broke from a
meek Washington press corps with probing questions for the new president.

SCULLY: You know the numbers, $1.7 trillion debt, a national deficit of $11
trillion. At what point do we run out of money?

OBAMA: Well, we are out of money now.

I don't know about you, but I'm beginning to think we need another amendment to our Constitution:  In addition to being
required to show us all of his/her original birth certificate, anyone who wants to be President also needs to have served in
our U.S. armed forces for at least four years.   Should this amendment also require that our Dear Leader be able to speak
extemporaneously without the aid of a Teleprompter?  No, that would be over-reaching.  Maybe to simplify things we
could just ask that anyone running for President be able to
pass a basic FBI background check; that should do it.

God bless our warriors who gave their lives to keep our great
republic
(be sure to watch this brief video if you are tempted to call the United
States a democracy, which we are not) strong and free, and to safeguard
the rights afforded us in our Constitution.

God bless all of those in uniform today, and God bless America
--

President Barack Obama

So what are we to do about this new national crisis?  As one friend wrote today, "Do you have any idea
for a recovery plan?"
Well, actually, yes.  Start small, start local and start simple.  Start asking questions at your local public
schools.  Get rid of fuzzy math.  Make sure kids are drilled in the basic math tables in the first four grades
and that they're learning phonics and accurate U.S. and world history.  Get the check register online.

Take a piece of what's closest to you -- as Steve Scully did with his interview of Mr. Obama -- and start
asking questions, all kinds of questions, about spending.  Go about all of this with as friendly a tone as you
can manage, and be sure to take the Golden Rule with you.

This is my plan.  What's yours?
Steve Scully
P.S. If you haven't read it,
please look up Amity Shlaes'
book on the
Depression.
Perhaps what we need to do is
not send tea bags to the White
House, but copies of this book.
So sad to see a U.S. President
who apparently missed the
essentials of American history

-- they didn't teach those at the
madrassa in Indonesia, eh? --

and, being unaware of them, is
condemned thereby to repeat
others' mistakes.
