eventually be sentenced to no more than two to six years
in prison. Gluckin, accused of stealing more than $4
million, also agreed to repay the district at least $2 million
before she is formally sentenced and another $2 million
after that, said Assistant District Attorney Peter Mancuso.
Gluckin has provided information against the five other
people charged so far in the case, including her son,
John McCormick of Center Moriches, N.Y., who was

SCHIFER, Michael - Former Port Clinton HS
(Ohio) principal, "resigned after a grade-point average
scandal in 2002 has settled his $50,000 lawsuit against
the school district. Michael Schifer said he ended his
quest to get his job back after the Port Clinton City School
District attorneys offered to reconcile the case this spring
before it went to trial. In November, his wife, Wendy, will
retire from her teaching job in the district, and the couple
plans to move to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. He
would consider applying for teaching or administrative
school jobs in South Carolina, he said. After the ODE
suspended his certificates, Schifer sued Anderson and
the district, accusing officials of promising him a false
severance package, ruining his reputation and trying to
get him fired from his job at the Sandusky sporting goods
store. The district denied the allegations and counter-
sued Schifer, accusing him of manipulating the GPAs in
secret using homemade math calculations." (SOURCE--
Kristina Smith/Port Clinton News Herald)
TASSONE, Frank - Was sup't-Roslyn Public
Schools (New York). A CLOSER LOOK: Tassone
"Pleaded guilty to grand larceny charges for what the state
comptroller has called the 'most extraordinary theft' from a
school system 'in American history,' The Associated
Press reported. Tassone entered the plea before
Nassau County Judge Alan Honorof in Mineola, N.Y.,
admitting that he took millions in taxpayer money to
finance a lavish lifestyle that included European jaunts on
the supersonic Concorde. As part of the deal with
prosecutors, the former schools superintendent pleaded
guilty to one count each of first- and second-degree grand
larceny. He will spend 4 to 12 years in prison and pay
back an estimated $2 million. If convicted at trial, he could
have faced up to 25 years in prison. Sentencing was set
for Nov. 29. 'I will make restitution to the Roslyn schools
and I am sorry for my poor judgment,' Tassone said while
reading an apology in court.
(SOURCE--NYSSCPA.org News Staff)
TORNILLO, Pat - Was president-United
Teachers of Dade (Miami-Dade County Public Schools)
(Florida); served time in prison. May be in Tallahassee.
A CLOSER LOOK: "Mr. Tornillo's plea agreement is an
insult to every teacher in Miami-Dade County. This plea
bargain prevents prosecutors from bringing any
additional UTD expenditure charges against Mr. Tornillo,
even though investigators are still combing through UTD
records. Even more amazing is that Mr. Tornillo does not
have to cooperate with investigators. As president of the
UTD, Mr. Tornillo robbed the union blind. Under his plea
agreement he pleaded guilty to one count of mail fraud
and one count of tax evasion and will only serve about
two years in prison. He's also agreed to repay only
$650,000 of the over $2,500,000 he stole; a $25,000 fine
and an additional $500,000 in back taxes, interest and
penalties. Mr. Tornillo ran the largest union in Miami-
Dade County for over 40 years. He could have provided
evidence against lobbyists, school board members,
county commissioners, and state legislators.
Unfortunately in accordance with the terms and
conditions of the plea bargain agreement, no charges
will be brought against Mr. Tornillo’s wife and he will not
have to cooperate in any other investigation."

POP QUIZ:
Is your supe really "For the kids" or for him/herself?
When the honeymoon ends and it's time for your supe to move on, is he/she insisting on a six-figure golden parachute-- or content to walk away, leaving any promised monies in the district's coffers "for the kids"?

Oakland, Mich. whistleblower speaks out
I could not understand how the (school) board could be so complacent with the superintendent. Later, I talked to some board members, and I think they were almost mesmerized by Jim Redmond. I, myself, felt almost captivated by him.
His techniques were flattery and asserting (to) people that they were the key to great changes in education.
The board began to have universal trust in him and adopted a consent agenda which obscured a lot of details.
Regarding Oakland's new admin. hq called the Taj Mahal because of its size & lavishness:
For me, personally, I have a difficult time walking in. The atrium is ostentatious and unnecessary. I've been working in school buildings in Pontiac and they are in need of repair, and I see what children in Pontiac are expected to (do school work) in every day, and I feel guilty walking into what I consider the lavish headquarters of Oakland Schools."
-- Guy Blackburn, former Pontiac school board member, who wrote a letter to then-state school supe Tom Watkins outlining his suspicions of mismanagement at Oakland Schools
NOTE: Blackburn is a 30+ year Oakland Schools employee, now its policy analyst, and author of a 1999 paper entitled, "Public Education Is Good and Getting Better"
