ILLUSTRATIONS AND PHOTOS

Artist Ragan Gennusa's painting, "Paint Creek" is at the far left of the Paint Creek ISD string, and is posted here with his kind permission.

I took the following photos:  all of the Mason (ISD) photos and the central one in the Northside ISD string.

All of the other photos are from either school districts or chamber of commerce or city/area visitor sites.  For example, all photos from Big Bend
are from the Big Bend
Visitor Photo Gallery.  If you'd like to know more, right click on the photo you'd like more information about.

Here is some supplemental material for which there was not room above, or, as with the case of Overton ISD and Runge ISD, as their check
registers are not online, the districts did not qualify for inclusion in the above roster.

How much? Thus far Mark's tab, according to new supe Alan Umholtz' is "$46,000 at
least. We want lawyer's fees, court fees, and the salary Shared Services paid him." But
what of Overton?  What's changed? While Umholtz has instituted new tighter internal
controls such as mileage reports on the use of district vehicles
(SOURCE--Charlotte
Heldenbrand/The Overton Press)
the most recent board meeting agenda posted on the
district's website is dated June 4, 2008, the most recent minutes posted online are
December 10, 2007, and "Carole Keaton Strayhorn" is listed as Texas Comptroller. (Susan
Combs was elected in November 2006.) With their most recently reported total
expenditures per student of
$15,722, if ever a school district was a prime candidate for
putting its checks and credit card receipts online in order to establish a clear demarcation
between the old and the new superintendent and school board, it's Overton ISD.

Round Rock, named for a
round rock in a river where
founding fathers used to fish,
has similar ties to the
Chisolm Trail.  Round Rock
also is tied to a colorful if
inept and sociopathic bandit,
Sam Bass, (left), after whom
one of the city's major
thoroughfares is named.

"The Adirondack 46ers," German physicist Herman Weyl, a quote from Descartes, and the definition of the word, "careen." And, yes, there's also a link to "
Six-man football."
Here's wishing more schools focused more on academics and less on team sports.  Perhaps such focus explains how a small rural 1A district can produce a  governor (Rick
Perry, above).
"Pflugerville was founded in 1860 when William Bohls established a general
store and post office in his residence, and named the town in honor of Henry
Pfluger.  Pfluger first arrived in the area in 1849, leaving his German homeland to
escape the Prussian War.  He first purchased 160 acres of land two miles east
of Austin from John Liese, a brother-in-law who had immigrated before him.  In
1853, Henry Pfluger exchanged the land for a larger farm about five miles east of
present day Pflugerville.  There, the family lived in a five-room log cabin and
raised corn, wheat, rye, beans, sweet potatoes, and sugar cane.  They also
raised cattle, which Henry and his sons drove to market on the Chisholm Trail."

Friends, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to the superintendents, administrators and trustees of the school districts below for posting their check registers
online.  I wish I could have done a snapshot in pictures of all of these districts.   The dollars in the pink column below represent "General Fund/Total Revenue"
forecasting for 2006-07; this is the amount we usually hear about as a school district's budget for the new year. The actual dollars spent are from also that same 2006-07
period, in the blue columns on the right half of the page.  Please scroll down to the bottom of the roster for more information from TEA regarding these numbers.

No wonder Pat/Pascal hasn't put Austin ISD's check register online yet!

If you'd like to look up other years, start here and follow the links.  Myself?  I only look at the actual financial data as the budgeted forecasts are
not nearly so useful -- or as grounded in reality.  Here's the full URL to get you to the page shown above; you can either click on it or copy and
paste it into your URL browser:

At the beginning of 2006-07, Austin ISD supe Pat Forgione forecast that Austin ISD would spend
$ 624,423,013 as its general fund, total revenue amount.  Curious how close Pat's forecast was to the amount he actually wrote
checks for during 2006-07?  I'm curious, too; after all, under his other name, "Pascal Forgione," he was the Clinton-appointed
U.S. Commissioner of Education Statistics who headed up the National Center for Education Statistics (until he and then-Vice
President Al Gore tangled on what the stats meant and he found the Austin ISD gig).

So let's click on the second red link above, scroll down again to Austin ISD and click one more time.   As it turns out, Pat's
forecast amount was short, by almost half:  $1,126,936,650 (all funds, total revenue).   To put this in historical perspective,
Austin ISD only gained about 4,000 students during that period yet its spending almost doubled:

Our schools reveal their priorities in many ways; you can quickly
size things up by looking at a district's website.  Notice what's
posted--and what isn't.  For example, let's look at Runge ISD:
